Why Honors?
It is difficult to answer this question because it is hard to imagine what my life would be like if I hadn’t chosen to participate in the Honors Program at MNSU. Throughout my years at MNSU, the Honors Program has given me so much to be thankful for. Not only did it give me live-long friends, inspiring mentors, and even a job while in college, but it has given me motivation to push myself even when things were difficult or uncomfortable. As a first-year student, I was drawn to this program because I wanted to be better. I wanted to be something more than just a student who had earned their degree after taking necessary courses. Now, as I am completing my final semester of college, I know that I have become the person that I am today because the Honors Program pushed me to grow in ways that I didn’t think were possible.
As a first-year student, I thought that I was going to have to drop out of the program because I didn’t think I could complete an undergraduate research project. I soon learned that research was more than test tubes and chemicals. I discovered that I could complete research in my own field of study, even in my own interests. Without Honors, I would have never thought about pushing myself to conduct my own research project, nor would I have learned that I loved it. Conducting this project helped me to understand the importance of always questioning and seeking new knowledge that I can apply to my career in the future.
While in the Honors Program at MNSU, I learned that being a leader means a lot more than signing up for organizations and receiving a title. I learned to listen, observe, and understand before I tried to take charge, and I even learned when I should sit down. Challenging yourself to interact with many different kinds of people can allow you to take on new perspectives and learn better ways of doing things. Learning to motivate yourself can be a challenge, but it is even more challenging to figure out how to motivate others to complete a common goal or to better themselves to help others.
One aspect that drew me to the Honors Program at MNSU was their focus on global citizenship. It was, and still is, my dream to travel abroad. Over the next few years at MNSU, I learned that there is a lot more to global citizenship than traveling to other countries. Learning and caring about other cultures can start in the country you live in, in the state you live in, and even the community you live in. Through the Honors Program, I was able to better reflect on the courses I took about race, disabilities, gender, and so much more. I pushed myself to take Sign Language courses. While learning a new language, I was also able to learn more about a culture I didn’t know existed. I learned to get out of my own little world and stop being ignorant about other cultures, history, and the lives around me.
Professionally, the Honors Program has instilled a drive for success and a desire for gaining new perspectives. I have been motivated to learn more about my field of study and have taken multiple internships. I knew that being in the Honors Program would look good on my resume after college, but I didn’t expect the Honors Program to impact my character in the way it has over the years. Another important thing that this program has given me is the confidence to present myself and to seek out challenges. I know that I am more prepared for my future because of my involvement in the Honors Program.
While I have learned a lot through my experiences in the Honors Program at MNSU, I know that I still have a lot more room left to grow. One of the most important take-aways that I’ve learned from the Honors Program is to continually seek to learn. I know that I am better equipped to take the experiences I’ve had with the Honors Program keep expanding on them in the future.
