Spring 2020
Teams Level 2
Teams Level 2
During the spring semester of 2020, I took HONR 401: Performance and Social Justice. This class helped me learn more about racial injustice through research, reflection, and performance, all while working and learning in a group setting. The goal of this class was to increase audience awareness of racial violence in Minnesota by disrupting historical narratives and ultimately motivating viewers to participate in social change action. We read articles, watched documentaries, listened to podcasts, and answered journal questions throughout this class. The final project for this class was to create a group project that would meet the goal of the class. Due to COVID-19, we had to re-think our plan for our group project and ultimately each created informational videos.
In my HONR 401 class, we had to work together to achieve a common goal for our final project (Teams Level 2). It was really interesting to work on a project with other people on a heavy topic that I had only just begun to learn about. From in-class discussions, we were able to learn from each other’s experiences, perspectives, values, and styles in order to create a project together. I learned that I needed to rely more on the instruction and guidance of other people because I felt less knowledgeable about this subject. I’m not always the best with words, especially in explaining race relations and problems in America. I enjoyed hearing other people’s thoughts and listening to their words. Reflecting back on this experience, there were times when I should have challenged myself to speak up and participate in the conversation in order to express my thoughts, understand my biases, and continue to learn more about myself. Even though we had to shift our plan for our project, we were still able to explore our own ideas as well as coming together to discuss class materials during the rest of the semester and then eventually combine all of our performances. Something I would do differently next time is to push myself to accomplish tasks sooner or speak up more, even when I am uncertain or just learning, so that I can check-in and seek feedback from other people in my group.
Leadership Artifact #2
This is my final video that I created for my class. The goal was to disrupt the narrative about race in America and increase awareness.
