Information Literacy Level 1
Information Literacy Level 1
During my first semester of college, I took my first sign language class. In this course, I was introduced to a new language and culture. Part of learning a new language involves learning about the culture and history behind the language. Our professor assigned a research paper on a selection of Deaf Culture-related topics. For my research paper, I chose to research different problems that parents of Deaf children face. In my paper, I explained my findings on problems and decisions parents with deaf children have to make concerning hearing devices, schooling, and language. This was one of the first steps I took to learn this culture that I was going to study for the next three semesters.
While conducting research for this paper, I was able to practice gathering information effectively, efficiently, and critically by taking the time to find credible and reliable sources (Information Literacy Level 1). This was one of my first university research papers where I was able to practice effectively, efficiently, and critically using and evaluating information. Before, I had always relied on the first few google searches to find information, but I challenged myself to expand my research. Instead of relying on quick google search findings, I gathered sources from more reliable resources in order to write a well-researched paper. I chose to use informational from medical sites in order get non-biased and accurate information that I could report on. Especially on a controversial topic with many different choices involved, it is important to separate facts from opinions when reporting information. Not only did I feel like my findings were more accurate, but I also realized that I was able to learn a lot more from my experience researching this topic using more credible information. If I had not taken the time to thoroughly gather reliable sources, I might have missed out on gaining new knowledge about this culture. Although this was a small research paper, this experience provided me with the practice of gathering information, which is a fundamental skill in the research process. Throughout my time in college, I was able to further expand on this skill in almost every class that I took. As I continue to use information literacy skills in my career for journalism or public relations tasks, I will continue to practice being conscious of using credible sources. Media professionals have a responsibility of accurately informing the public, so it is essential that we take the time to properly gather reliable sources.
