Fall 2017 ─ Spring 2019
Teams Level 1 and 3
Teams Level 1 and 3
The Honors Student Body is a registered student organization that focuses on fostering a community within the Honors Program at MSU and also helps to facilitate communication between members, administration, and the campus. During my first year of college, I ran and was voted into the freshman representative position for the Honors Student Body Executive Board. The following year, I continued my involvement in this program as the secretary. I thought that this experience would help me become more involved in the Honors Program, allow me to meet upperclassmen in the program, and gain leadership experience. During my time as a representative, I sent out numerous emails to my class, helped plan events in board meetings, and participated in our meetings and service projects. As a secretary, I more actively helped to lead the group, organized meeting agendas and minutes, and attended Honors Council meetings.
This experience helped me understand why there are various roles within a group (Teams Level 1). During my time as an HSB Representative, I was able to work with a variety of different people who had different responsibilities in the group and who each brought different aspects to our team. In group meetings and at events, I was able to observe how there are many different types of leaders necessary in order to make a team successful. It was helpful that each of us thought and acted in differing ways because it brought new ideas to our group. The HSB had specific and set roles that helped our meetings function and helped us to accomplish tasks. Each member of this group was accountable for their own tasks such as sending emails to students, talking with Honors faculty, or taking meeting minutes. Each task served its own purpose, and whenever a team member dropped a task, it negatively affected this group. Creating different tasks for group members to accomplish helps to increase efficiency as well as tailor to people’s differing skillsets. I was able to grow as a leader by becoming more confident in my own abilities and communication skills with peers. I was also able to learn from watching how my other team members completed their own tasks. By learning why there are various roles within a group setting, I will be able to better understand how groups function. I will also have more respect for other people’s differing skillset because I have learned that each person and task can bring in important elements for the group. As I am entering a field where collaboration and teamwork is frequent, I will be able to apply this knowledge and continually grow from this experience.
By reflecting on the various roles within a group setting, I was able to learn more about different leadership styles that are required for varying situations (Teams Level 3). My second year in the HSB was more challenging than the first year because roles, leadership, and purposes of the group were not formed or understood early on. During our struggles of defining duties within the group, I was able to reflect on what is required from the different roles within group settings. This experience taught me a lot about different types of leadership styles that are required for various roles. I was able to experience different kinds of leadership styles that I had not experienced before and was able to see what worked and what didn’t work as well. There were some members on the HSB that had very quiet leadership styles, and there were other members that had more controlling leadership styles. Being a leader of a group of people who aren't clear about their roles and duties, I found required a more direct method of leadership. However, to creative a positive environment, sometimes a relaxed and quiet leadership style was required. Working with different leadership styles and relying on other team members for various leadership styles was difficult at first but was key to our success at the end of the academic year. This experience on the HSB taught me that different roles are required for a group to succeed, and the various roles may require various leadership styles. I learned that there are different situations and roles that call for various leadership styles.
