Fall 2020
Teams Level 4
Teams Level 4
In order to complete my final Mass Media requirements, I needed to take an internship for credit. Originally, I was planning on completing these credits through an internship abroad in Florence, Italy. Due to COVID-19, those plans had to change. I got connected with Mary Tan and became a public relations/digital media intern for her company, Whisker Media. As an intern, I wrote press releases, blog posts, managed contact lists, and pitched stories. While gaining real-world experience in my desired career field, I also gained feedback and guidance from my supervisor. I will complete 180 internship hours for this credit requirement in December 2020, but I plan to continue to work with Whisker Media post-graduation.
Through my experience with Whisker Media, I have developed a general leadership philosophy that will guide future collaboration within groups in my career field as well as in other circumstances (Teams Level 4). Not only has Mary Tan been my supervisor, but she has also been my mentor. She has been able to teach me about her past experience in the media field as well as explain how she is solving problems as a public relations professional today. Not only have I been able to add experiences and work to my professional portfolio, I have also made realizations about the media field that will help guide me in the future. As much as media professionals like to plan ahead, sometimes plans can change suddenly so you need to be flexible. As I learned in my journalist internship, some projects have a short deadline. While the media field can be stressful at times, I have noticed that Tan approaches everything with a positive attitude and a willingness to be collaborative. In my Walgreens internship, my manager taught me the importance of inspiring others as a leader. In my future as a media professional where I will work very closely with other companies, co-workers, and groups, I need to recognize that each team member has the ability to contribute something important to the group. In order to meet deadlines with a quality product, I need to stay positive and encourage group members so that we can bring out the best in each other. Working in media, to me, means that I need to be creative, collaborative, open-minded, organized, and optimistic. I believe that everyone has something to offer, and leadership should work hard to create a positive atmosphere that allows for creativity, collaboration, and progress.
Leadership Artifact #1
Below is my first press release that I wrote and Mary Tan edited. This was written for Ruff Start Rescue in order to advertise their new Kid's Kits. This was sent out to multiple news outlets and was picked up on a few local television networks.
