Fall 2017 ─ Spring 2018
Values Level 1
Values Level 1
The Learning Community (LC) program at MSU is a group of students that are involved in the same major or program that participate in activities and study sessions organized by an upperclassmen mentor. During my first year at MSU, I chose to be involved in the Honors Launch LC, which is designed to help first-year students of the Honors Program connect with other members and learn more about the program. This program helped me to learn more about myself, explore new areas, create lasting friendships, and feel more connected to MSU.
By being involved in the LC activities, learning from my mentor, and being surrounded by other leaders and types of people, I was able to learn more about myself and my leadership values (Values Levels 1). Throughout the year, we were asked to participate in activities that bonded us as a team and helped to further our growth at MSU. While participating in various group activities in the Honors LC, I was able to surround myself with many different types of leaders, some who held similar values and some who held differing values. I learned a lot about myself throughout these experiences that helped to shape my leadership values. I was able to learn that I value leaders who are honest, respectful, and straightforward. Events that were successful were communicated thoroughly and directly while unsuccessful events were not communicated well. I found that I work best under clear direction. After being involved in a group and being guided by a leader, I began forming what type of leader I wanted to be. I'm very thankful for this experience because it not only helped me to become more involved in the Honors Program, but it also helped me to create friendships with people who held the same values as I did, but otherwise were very different from myself. Through this experience I was able to identify what I thought was important for me to demonstrate to others who I am as a leader. As a continuously growing leader, understanding your values and the differing values others hold around you is important to be able to work as a team. Being cognizant of my values will help me understand what drives me as a leader and how I can use those values to motivate others.
