Summer 2019
Values Levels 3 and 4
Values Levels 3 and 4
During the summer of 2019, I was hired as a Community Management Intern, CMI, at Walgreens. In this position, I worked alongside the store manager and worked in all aspects of the store. I worked the cash registers, helped re-stock items, re-arranged items according to planograms, learned about the pharmacy and other departments, and learned what shift leads and managers do to keep the store running smoothly. I am very grateful to say that I was able to work with an amazing store manager and leader as well as other employees that taught me about leadership styles and the ability to work with a variety of people.
While being mentored from my store manager, I was able to learn from and analyze his different leadership styles (Values Level 3). Throughout the summer, I learned how my manager’s leadership style first developed and then how he drastically had to change his leadership style in order to make it more effective. He had to completely re-learn how to lead others in a more effective and collaborative way. I was able to learn about how ineffective his previous leadership style was and then I was able to observe the effectiveness of his current leadership style. After experiencing different leadership styles in my HSB experience, it was easier to understand and learn more about how effective and ineffective his leadership styles were. He also mentored me by sharing and discussing various leadership books that he’s read throughout the years that further explained his leadership style. By learning from and critiquing his earlier leadership style, I was able to infer what was necessary of a successful leader as well as pay attention to the type of leader he was at the time. During meetings and throughout the general workday, I saw how he was able to bring his team together by empowering them and giving them the motivation to work for the team instead of only delegating tasks. I also learned how important it is to take time to reflect upon your previous leadership styles because it can help to guide and change your future actions. It is important to understand that, while there are many different types of leadership styles that can work for numerous groups, sometimes there are also ineffective leadership styles that can negatively impact the group. Being able to analyze various leadership styles and their effectiveness will help me learn from previous mistakes as well as understand how there are different methods needed for different groups or situations. One thing that I will work on is how to adjust my leadership style in the middle of leading a group, rather than reflect on the experience once it is finished.
By using my personal leadership values and theories, I was able to implement a project that guided employees (Values Level 4). I was able to grow as a leader by being put in a situation that forced me to practice my leadership style as well as learn how to adapt and change my style with the different interactions I had with employees. For my internship, I conducted a final project that I would then present to my store’s District Manager. For my final project, I worked within my store to create an employee game that had the goal of improving our store’s Net Promoter Score, NPS (customer satisfaction). This learning experience helped me to further develop and practice my leadership style within my work organization. One of the main ideas about leadership that I learned was the importance of motivating the people you are leading. Working at Walgreens that summer taught me that I can’t just be nice and understanding toward people in order to lead. Instead, I have to figure out how to inspire them to care about the work that they do for themselves and for everyone else that they work with. I learned and adapted from my manager’s leadership style and took on a more visionary leadership style for my final project at this internship. I used my personal leadership values of humility and collaboration to talk with other team members to implement a team project at work. Among other tasks, I had to figure out how to connect with all of our store’s employees and help inspire them to interact more positively with customers. I will forever be applying and learning from my personal leadership values in order to help guide my leadership style in the future. Not only will I work on being able to use my values to effectively guide a group, but I will also work on being able to incorporate other group member’s values in order to effectively motivate and lead others.

Leadership Artifact #3
This was my final presentation that I created for my internship at Walgreens. Throughout the course of my internship, I put together a project for my coworkers to participate in to improve our NPS, Net Promoter Score.
